Try to be as inventive and adventurous as possible.

Sugar should never be added to weaning food or drinks, this can increase the risk of tooth decay. Acidic drinks like juice and squashes can also damage teeth so should be limited to mealtimes only. Between meals the best drink is cooled boiled water.

Beware of hidden sugars in pre-prepared baby foods.

Soft sugar-free foods can be encouraged from 6 months. Try some of these tooth-friendly snacks:

  • Raw vegetables
  • Fresh fruit i.e. pieces of banana
  • Tinned fruit (in natural juice) with plain natural yoghurt
  • Pieces of cheese
  • Crackers/Breadsticks
  • Bread products i.e. toast, pitta breads, crumpets
  • Plain popcorn
