This is a type of treatment that helps to straighten teeth; it can work to improve the appearance, position and function of teeth.

Who needs them?

Children or adults where their teeth have not developed in the correct way.

If teeth are not corrected it may not cause any serious physical health problems but can affect a person psychologically which can lead to low self esteem and depression.

Orthodontic treatment is only available free-of-charge on the NHS for young people who:

  • are under 18 years old
  • have a clear clinical need for treatment

NHS orthodontic care is not usually available for adults but may be approved on a case-by-case basis if the functional needs are great.
